Perbandingan pemikiran tentang multikulturalisme dipandang penting pada saat ini sebab banyak ditemukannya kesalahan pandangan yang berpendapat bahwa Islam identik dengan ketertutupan terhadap kelompok lain, sedangkan di sisi lain Barat selalu diidentikkan dengan keterbukaan. Atau pandangan lain yang juga kurang tepat, seolah Islam hanya berkutat dalam pembatasan sedangkan Barat selalu erat dengan keluasan. Sehingga kemudian muncul kesan bahwa Islam harus selalu ter-Barat-kan, lantaran ketertutupannya.

Sejatinya dalam beberapa hal antara kelompok liberal dengan islamis juga bisa dikatakan memiliki kedekatan seperti dalam kebijakan kebebasan beragama. Baik liberalis dan islamis dapat bertemu pada titik bahwa tidak ada pemaksaan antar pemeluk agama untuk memaksakan agamanya kepada pihak di luar agamanya.

Melalui buku ini Penulis mengajak para Pembaca untuk menikmati perbandingan pemikiran tentang multikulturalisme antara pemikir Barat yang diwakili oleh William A. Galston (pemikir politik ternama di Amerika Serikat dan pernah menempati posisi sebagai penasehat politik pemerintahan Bill Clinton dan juga pernah terlibat sebagai tim sukses Algore dan Walter Mondale sebagai calon Presiden Amerika Serikat) dan pemikir Islamis yang diwakili oleh Yusuf al-Qaradawi (ahli fikih kontemporer yang diakui banyak pihak seputar kepakarannya dalam ilmu-ilmu keislaman).
