Sinyal EMG merupakan sinyal elektrik yang terdapat pada lapisan otot manusia. Sinyal ini muncul disebabkan oleh adanya aktifitas kontraksi otot. Sinyal EMG dapat direkam dengan menggunakan suatu perangkat yang disebut electromyograph (EMG). Sinyal ini dapat diakuisisi dengan cara menempelkan suatu elektroda pada lapisan permukaan kulit kemudian elektroda ini akan menangkap sinyal mentah (raw signal) EMG. Sinyal mentah EMG ini akan dilakukan preprocessing terlebih dahulu dengan metode filtering, rectified dan smoothing. Setelah dilakukan preprocessing, sinyal EMG ini akan melalui proses ekstraksi fitur untuk mendapatkan data EMG hasil ekstraksi menggunakan onset, offset dan durasi sinyal. Selanjutnya data EMG ini akan diklasifikasi menggunakan metode learning vector quantization (LVQ) untuk mengetahui tingkat perbedaan atau keunikan sinyal EMG pada otot lengan bagian bawah pada saat gerakan fleksi dan ekstensi pergelangan tangan yang dikombinasikan dengan gerakan menggenggam dan membuka telapak tangan pada setiap individu manusia normal. Dengan adanya tingkat perbedaan dan variasi dari sinyal EMG pada otot lengan bagian bawah ini maka gerakan menggenggam dan membuka telapak tangan pada manusia dapat digunakan untuk identitas biometrik dan pengontrol tangan buatan.
