Belajar (learning) sering didefinisikan sebagai perubahan perilaku yang relatif menetap dan merupakan hasil dari pengalaman. Ketika kita memikirkan pembelajaran, mungkin kita akan terjebak ke dalam proses pendidikan formal yang terjadi selama masa kanak-kanak hingga awal masa dewasa, tetapi belajar sesungguhnya adalah proses berkelanjutan yang terjadi di seluruh kehidupan.

Dewasa ini teori belajar merupakan ilmu yang penggunaannya makin dirasakan kepentingannya. Hampir semua dunia pendidikan baik yang formal maupun informal terus mengembangkan teori-teori belajar untuk diterapkan dalam kelas-kelas belajar. Mulai dari proses belajar di pendidikan anak usia dini, sekolah dasar sampai kepada pendidikan tinggi.

Buku ini ditulis sebagai buku ajar yang disusun secara sekuensial berdasarkan perkembangan teori belajar dan dari pendekatan pemahaman belajar secara global sampai ke yang spesifik, khususnya untuk memudahkan mahasiswa dalam mengikuti mata kuliah psikologi belajar dan kognitif. Namun demikian, buku ini juga sangat tepat dimiliki oleh masyarakat umum dalam memahami konsep-konsep dasar dan aplikasi dari proses belajar yang berlandaskan teori belajar dan kognitif.
