Manusia terus dipengaruhi oleh polutan lingkungan eksternal. Kegiatan sehari-hari dapat melibatkan kontak dengan banyak sumber pencemaran lingkungan; ini dapat disentuh dengan tangan, ada pada sepatu saat berjalan, atau terkandung debu pada tubuh dan rambut; menggerakkan tangan ke mulut juga menyebabkan mikroorganisme memasuki tubuh. (Aslan et al., 2006; Yılmaz dan Özkan 2009).

Higiene adalah seperangkat praktik yang dilakukan untuk menjaga kesehatan. Higiene sering dikaitkan dengan tubuh kita. Menurut Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia (WHO), higiene mengacu pada kondisi dan praktik yang membantu menjaga kesehatan dan mencegah penyebaran penyakit. Salah satu cara paling efektif untuk melindungi diri sendiri dan orang lain dari penyakit adalah dengan mengadopsi praktik-praktik perorangan (higiene perorangan) yang baik.

Sementara itu melalui Peraturan Menteri Kesehatan Republik Indonesia Nomor: 2269/Menkes/Per/XI/2011 Tanggal͕ 10 November 2011 Tentang Pedoman Pembinaan Perilaku Hidup Bersih dan Sehat (PHBS) menyebutkan bahwa pengertian dasar PHBS yaitu sekumpulan perilaku yang dipraktikkan atas dasar kesadaran sebagai hasil pembelajaran, yang menjadikan sebuah keluarga, kelompok atau masyarakat mampu menolong dirinya sendiri (mandiri) di bidang kesehatan dan berperan aktif dalam mewujudkan kesehatan masyarakat.

Melalui buku ini, Penulis membahas secara mendalam tentang topik higiene perorangan dan PHBS. Kedua topik tersebut dipandang komprehensif dalam lingkup kesehatan individu dan sosial.
