Industri Asuransi Syariah secara umum memiliki aset dan penetrasi yang relatif masih kecil dibandingkan dengan aset dan penetrasi asuransi konvensional. Dengan keuangan syariah global, Asuransi Syariah hanya memiliki market share sebesar 1% dari total aset keuangan global dengan nilai diprediksi pada tahun 2018 sebesar $3 Triliun, yang terdiri dari lebih 600 lembaga keuangan syariah di 75 negara diseluruh dunia. Untuk meningkatkan penetrasi pasar, industri Asuransi Syariah perlu melakukan banyak terobosan sehingga dapat mereposisi diri di pasar keuangan, salah satunya adalah membuat produk Asuransi Syariah mikro seperti Asuransi Syariah Pemakaman.

Anne Case menyatakan bahwa biaya pemakaman, khususnya dengan cara dikubur semakin hari semakin tinggi, khususnya di negaranegara maju, seperti Amerika, Eropa, Australia bahkan di negara berkembang di Afrika. Biaya pemakaman merupakan faktor utama yang menjadi tantangan umat Islam di dunia, selain faktor-faktor lain, seperti keterbatasan lahan, ketentuan regulasi disuatu negara serta budaya dan agama mayoritas.

Di Indonesia, pengelolaan pemakaman merupakan usaha yang relatif baru berkembang dimulai dengan munculnya kawasan makam elite oleh group lippo, yaitu Sandiago Hills Memorial Park. Setelah itu muncul juga pengelola makam Islami, yaitu Al Azhar Memorial Garden, di susul juga pengelola yang lain, yaitu Firdaus Memorial Park. Perkembangan kegiatan pemakaman yang bersifat ekslusif ini menuai kritik dan kecaman dari masyarakat, yang pada akhirnya direspon oleh Majelis Ulama Indonesia dengan menerbitkan sebuah Fatwa Haram bagi pengelolaan Makam Mewah. Dalam fatwa ini disebutkan bahwa jual-beli makam Mewah hukumnya haram, namun untuk makam yang bersifat sederhana maka hukumnya boleh, bertujuan untuk menjaga agar umat Islam mendapatkan pelayanan yang layak dan tidak bercampurnya antara makam muslim dan non-muslim.
